- The Memorial was opened to the public on September 11, 2008--seven years after the attack
- The Memorial includes 184 bench-like structure(called memorial units), each dedicated to a victim
- The memorial units have a victim's name, age, and the location at the time of the attack inscribed on it
- The units are laid out in a pattern according to the age of the victims starting from the 3-year-old Dana Falkenberg to the 71-year-old John D.Yamnicky.
- The units are designed to face different directions. Those honoring the victims on board Flight 77 are arranged facing the direction of the planes approach to the Pentagon, while those honoring the victims inside the Pentagon face the plane's point of impact on the Pentagon's south facade.
- There's a shallow lighted pool of flowing water positioned under each memorial bench
- If more than one family member died under the attack, family names are listed in the reflecting pool under the bench, as well as their individual benches.
- The benches are surrounded by 85 Crepe Myrtles trees (that will grow up to 30 feet tall).
- A wall along the edge of the memorial starts at a height of 3 inches and rises to a height of 71 inches, representing the ages from the youngest to the oldest victim of the attack.
